TOKYO (AP) — An outspoken nationalist mayor said the Japanese military’s forced prostitution of Asian women before and during World War II was necessary to “maintain discipline” in the ranks and provide rest for soldiers who risked their lives in battle.

This short documentary covers the tragedy of child marriage. Check it out, and remember that we have the power to impact these issues.
I watched this documentary in one of my classes today, and I was struck by the way this group of immigrants advocated for their rights. Remember that there are sweatshops here in the US, and slave labor exists everywhere there is a demand for cheap products.

Half the Sky’s website has a list of organizations that you can volunteer with to change the world. Check it out if you are interested in becoming involved on the ground-level of the fight for equality and human rights.
The documentary “Opium Brides” is a revealing look into this issue on a more in-depth level. If you haven’t seen the other documentary these filmmakers created, “The Dancing Boys of Afghanistan,” check that one out too. My heart breaks for these poor girls and families who are being exploited by forces so much larger than themselves.
